Snow in Maine and a Thomason in Hand

The lovely and I headed out in the wee hours on Saturday morning for Maine. The roads were quiet, and as we made our way through Portland and we could see clouds on the horizon. Snow would be falling soon.

As we passed Montsweag flea market ( a favorite haunt of mine ) I checked the temperature outside; 16 degrees! I glanced off to the left, and there was nary a dealer in sight. Oh well, maybe in the Spring!

Through Thomaston and Rockland the snow was accumulating, and the boat ride to the island was a winter wonderland. Snow flying sideways, swirling in the air, it was awesome!

It was a quick turnaround, but we still a wonderful time on the island. And, as we headed back down, we decided to stop of in York, Maine where we had a fabulous nosh and a glass of wine. Sufficiently fed, we started on our way again, but made a quick stop at an antique store I have been wanting to go to for some time. The problem is, we usually drive home late on Sunday, and we usually aren’t passing this particular antique store until it is closed. Well, the timing was right. The antique store was open, and even more exciting they had corkscrews!!!

4 of them!

A thomason without a badge, which remains at the antique shop given its asking price

A german spring with a horn handle. That too remains at the antique shop given its asking price.

An interesting mechanical that is similar to a perille fly nut, but has a bone/horn handle. I was tempted, but couldn’t get them to break price. Upon getting home and reading Ferd’s Mechanical book, I am glad that one remains at the antique shop.

And, there is this little beauty. With the asking price less than half of the badge-less Thomason, the dealer then cut me even a bigger deal by reducing it by another 30 percent ! ! ! !

Yes, it is missing its brush, and there a a couple of chips to the bone handle, but it is quite lovely!

A quick, snow-filled, fun corkscrewy adventure!
