Noyes-y

As mentioned the other day, I recently added a couple of Noyes patents to the collection that carried advertising OTHER than the Green River version that often shows up.

And, now there is yet another example heading to Maine.

This example carries advertising for LADD & CO, LIQUOR DEALERS

ladd

Ladd & Co, was a California based company, the that amongst other products, sold Old Alexander Whiskey.

A fun addition to a growing collection of variations of advertising on the 1906 Noyes patent corkscrew.

I would like to add the Olympia and Menstell to the collection!

Still, what other versions are out there?  Drop me a line!

on the dollar table…

The past week, I have been on vacation.

Yes, it’s true.

I took a week off from developing curriculum, and while some of that time was dedicated to new lighting in the corkscrew room, landscaping the yard behind the Vinalhaven house, and a few more requisite chores that needed tending, the last few days the lovely bride and I headed off on an adventure to Southwest Harbor, Maine.

sw

For those unfamiliar, Bar Harbor is a pretty popular place, even in these times, and on the OTHER side of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, is Southwest Harbor.  This non-Bar-Harbor-ish area is known as “the quiet side.”

So, we packed up the kayaks, a fair amount of wine, and headed up.

And, we enjoyed some quiet time kayaking various waterways, going out to eat again, as restaurants are allowed to re-open for dine-in eating (albeit with a fair amount of restrictions) and doing a bit of hiking and running along backroads of Maine and the trails of Acadia.

On our last day, as we headed back down to the midcoast, we hit a couple of flea markets–most of the dealers and shoppers were wearing masks–and in one tent, I found three corkscrews.

On the dollar table.

Technically, each of which was worth the asking price of $1.00, but I only grabbed one.

A simple T-pull, nicely marked for R. Murphy.

tmurph

Actually, it’s marked twice for R. Murphy Boston

After getting back to Rockland, and the lovely picking up Philos from boarding, we headed out in the Penn-Yan; taking a spin around the Rockland harbor.

A fantastic week of getting away from it all, whilst still staying in Maine.

Noyes-es

noyes

In 1906, Harry Noyes was awarded patent # 824,807 for his cork extractor.

And, while not rare, it is a neat little corkscrew, that often turns up with advertising for GREEN RIVER WHISKEY, THE WHISKEY WITHOUT A HEADACHE

And, underneath the lever, they are marked with Universal June 27, ‘05-July 3, ‘06,” as he had an earlier patent–and actually later patents as well.

Noyes was awarded another patent in 1908 Patent for a Pocket Cork Extractor.

1908

Anyone have the 1908 patent?

That said, there are other examples other than the Green River, with the blank version being a little harder to find.

Still, there are others that utilized the Universal Lever Cork Extractor as a vehicle to market their products.

mensell

In 2017, Jack had a foursome of Noyes-es for sale, two with advertising for Green River, one blank, and one that featured advertising for WM. MENSTELL, 465 LENOX AVE. N.Y.

I have several examples of the Noyes.  Both the Green Whiskey and the blank

But also: BROTHERHOOD WINE CO., 328-334 SPRING ST. N.Y.

And, recently picked up a Noyes that has advertising for OLD JERSEY WHISKEY, WILLIAM FRIES

In the JFO (Just for Openers) handbook, they have a listing for the NOYES (known in JFO speak as a P-041) carrying an advertisement for OLYMPIA YES! IT’S THE WATER.

But, this leads me to a question for all of you.  Do you have a Noyes with different advertising.  Feel free to drop me a line, and let’s see what we can come up with!

Pearl Wedding Select Whiskey

One of the coolest aspect of collecting, is that over the years, as you develop friendships with other collectors, your collecting friends will make trades with you knowing that they have something you want.  And, of course, you are well aware of corkscrews that will also fit within their collections.

And, as word has gotten out that I am on the 1903 Lowenstein patent hunt, TC offered up his Pearl Wedding Select Whiskey example as part of a trade.

pearlweddingryewhiskey

In doing research into Lowenstein and those that used his patent as a vehicle for advertising, Pearl Wedding is key, as within their advertising at the time, they actually feature a corkscrew attached to their bottle.

On the two bottles on the right, the Lowenstein is shown…

Hmmmm… reduce the size of the image, rotate clockwise, erase the background…

Looks like it should fit…

A really cool addition to the collection.  Thanks for the deal TC!

If you have a similar corkscrew, with different advertising, I am interested!

A & P

As mentioned the other day, I am on the Lowenstein patent corkscrew hunt.

And, recently a trade was made that sent the yellow version of the A & P advertising corkscrew to the island.

IMG_3287

An advertisement for “THE GREAT A. & P. TEA CO’S. EXTRACTS,”  it’s a nice little piece to add to the collection.

Any others out there.   I have lots of trade bait?  Do you have a Clough-like corkscrew with a advertising hang tag?

The. Best. Book Review. Ever.

When the Syroco Corkscrew book was published, I grabbed a couple of extra copies with the intention of gifting one to the Holstein family (the founders of Syroco) and another to the University of Syracuse.

It was also my intention, that the lovely bride and I would be making a road trip to Syracuse to drop these off in person.

Of course, life became life, and those plans had yet to come to fruition.  And, then with Covid-19, and travel being limited, those plans had to be scrapped.

So, after recently engaging with a bit of conversation with another member of the Holstein family, I wrapped up a copy of the book, and mailed it to Alex in Syracuse…

And, as it happens, he is nearing his 96th birthday, and it would come as a surprise; arriving early this week.

I could just picture he and Chuckie (Mrs. Holstein) opening up the box, finding a note that I had written, and then paging through 300+ pages of Syroco history, corkscrews, openers, etc.

And, just the other day, I got an email from Alex.

It brought the biggest smile to my face.  It is indeed, for me, The. Best. Book Review. Ever.

SYROCO_ Front Cover[1]

“A warm and hearty thank you for sending me the masterpiece book on SyrocoWood! You did a wonderful job in capturing the origin of the variety of corkscrews made by our company, many I did not remember until I saw the great photos in your book. You also accurately and beautifully told the family story about how it all began. Your inclusive dedication of this magnificent book to me is not only a surprise but greatly appreciated it, especially now as I approach my 96th birthday. You can’t imagine the pride and appreciation I feel…”

As much as I have been pleased by the fact that the collectors that have acquired this book have mentioned how much they enjoy it, this just made my day.

Thank you to Alex, and to the Holstein family, not only for your willingness to entertain an overzealous collector’s want to learn about your family, your company, and the history of these objects, but for making those objects in the first place, which clearly created that zeal.

And, thank you to Tommy and Ion, this wouldn’t have happened without you!

Weiss-Eichold

This morning, while sipping coffee, I was checking email, and JM sent in a photo of the two Lowenstein patents in their collection.

One was a red A & P, and the other, I had never seen or heard of before, serving as an advertisement for:

WEISS – EICHOLD

LIQUOR CO.

MOBILE

ALA

weiss

With a little research, it appears that Weiss-Eichold was wholesale dealer of Liquors, Cigars, and Tobaccos, and apparently a  “Rectifier of Spirits.”

And, they produced brands such as A BIG HIT whiskey, GOLDEN CREAM whiskey, and blended brands such as BELLE OF MOBILE, RAG TIME, and SIMON SUGGS.
